Topsail Spring Surf and Pier Challenge Welcome

May 5 – 7, 2017

WELCOME

Welcome to the 3rd annual Fisherman’s Post Topsail Spring Surf & Pier Fishing Challenge (technically fourth annual for surf, but third for the combined surf/pier event), a spring event that includes Topsail’s many miles of ocean beachfront perfect for surf fishing as well as the island’s three vibrant fishing piers. This year’s schedule of events will follow the model of last year’s, with round-the-clock fishing from the piers and sand starting at midnight on Friday, May 5, and the fishing wrapping up at noon on Sunday, May 7.

The two divisions (Surf and Pier) will again be competing against themselves, with four target species and a separate Red Drum Calcutta filling slots on two independent leaderboards. The heaviest bluefish, flounder, sea mullet, and black drum will earn bounties for the lucky surf anglers weighing in the heaviest five fish for each species (totaling 20 payouts!). And competitors fishing the planks will be looking for bluefish, spanish mackerel, sea mullet, and black drum in order to be walking away with prize checks of their own.

And to help anglers catch fish and fill up the leaderboard, depending on the strength of the bite by May 4 of any species, the tournament committee may replace one species with another. For example, if the spanish bite on the piers isn’t happening, then we may replace spanish with a flounder category.

In addition to a separate leaderboard for primary payouts, there are also separate Red Drum Calcuttas for surf and pier anglers to determine who can land the heaviest slot red drum (18-27”) over the event’s 36 hours of fishing. The Special Prizes this year will be a combined competition, though, with surf and pier anglers all competing together to be the Junior, Lady, or Senior Angler champions.

This year we’re continuing the Pier Cup Award—the pier angler that weighs in the heaviest fish (not counting red drum) will get his/her name and weight of fish engraved on the Pier Cup, along with the name of the pier where the fish was caught. And the Pier Cup will reside at the pier where the winning fish was caught until the next Topsail Surf & Pier event when the Pier Cup will need to be defended.

Last spring the Pier Cup was won by Scott Greer with a 1.8 lb. bluefish caught while fishing from Jolly Roger Pier, and currently the Pier Cup resides at Surf City Pier thanks to Harry Sholar’s 3.8 lb. black drum weighed in last fall.

We’re very excited to be bringing the Topsail Spring Surf & Pier Challenge HQ once again to the East Coast Sports’ property where they will be generously supporting Sunday’s Awards Dinner. East Coast Sports offers not only a central location for our Registration and Awards, but it’s also the island’s most fully-stocked tackle shop for anglers needing to gear up on supplies leading into the competition.

Along with the camaraderie and competition that comes with bringing hundreds of pier and surf casters to Topsail’s shores, all participants will receive complimentary tickets to the event’s Awards Dinner (Sunday following the close of fishing) and Raffle (held just after the 2:00 pm Awards Ceremony).

The sponsors who support these events make everything we do possible, so please take time to support and thank the businesses who help us make the Topsail Spring Surf & Pier Fishing Challenge a reality. And come see us under the tent at East Coast Sports for Friday’s Registration to get in on the fun, or you can contact us at (910) 452-6378 or surf@fishermanspost.com for any further information.
