Eddie, of Hatteras Jack, reports that the speckled trout bite is still excellent in the sound around Rodanthe. Anglers are hooking the specks around the barge, Rodanthe harbor, and the sound accesses at mile marker 48 and in Avon. Gulp baits and other soft plastics are producing most of the action.
Surf anglers are still catching plenty of croaker, sea mullet, spot, and other bottom feeders on shrimp, bloodworms, and small cut baits.
Large sharks are feeding close to shore all over the area, and anglers have been hooking them from the piers and the beach, with especially good action around the Point. Large cut baits are the way to go for the sharks.
The spanish mackerel bite has also been excellent at the Point, where anglers are hooking up while working small metal lures from the beaches.
In addition, boaters are hooking big numbers of spanish while trolling Clarkspoons around Oregon Inlet.
Sheepshead are still feeding around the Bonner Bridge pilings. Sand fleas will tempt them to bite.
There’s been a good flounder bite in the inlet as well, with live baits and Gulps producing most of the action.
Kathleen, of Rodanthe Pier, reports that bottom fishermen are hooking up with croaker, spadefish, pompano, and a mixed bag of other species on shrimp and bloodworms.
Some bluefish are falling for metal lures worked from the pier.
Malcolm, of Frank and Fran’s Tackle, reports that bottom fishermen are hooking up with spot, sea mullet, pompano, and other bottom feeders in the surf. Shrimp and bloodworms are producing most of the action, but sand fleas are the way to go for the pompano.
Spanish mackerel and bluefish are also feeding along the beaches, and working small metal lures early and late in the day is the way to hook up with them.
Earl, of Avon Pier, reports that some spanish mackerel and bluefish are falling for Gotcha plugs and other small metal lures.
Bottom fishermen are connecting with some spot and other bottomfish on shrimp and bloodworms.
Live-baiters had some action with cobia and king mackerel last week.
Bob, of Frisco Bait and Tackle, reports that surf casters are finding solid action with flounder and pompano from the Frisco and Buxton beaches. Small live baits or Gulps are the way to go for the flatfish, and the pompano are taking an interest in shrimp and sand fleas.
Anglers casting small metal lures from the beaches are hooking some fat spanish mackerel around the Point. Big numbers of bluefish are also falling for metal around Hatteras Inlet in the evenings.
The offshore fleet is connecting with plenty of dolphin, as well as some wahoo, tuna, and sailfish.
Kyle, of Frisco Bait and Tackle, reports that anglers are hooking big numbers of bluefish and spanish mackerel on metal lures around the Point and Hatteras Inlet.
Some pompano, sea mullet, spot, and croaker are taking an interest in shrimp, bloodworms, and sand fleas in the breakers.
A few flounder have been falling for Gulps and small live baits in the surf.
Inshore, speckled trout and flounder are taking an interest in Gulp baits back in the sound.
Trolling Clarkspoons in the sound and around the inlet has been producing plenty of action with bluefish and spanish mackerel.
The offshore fleet is still finding good numbers of dolphin and a surprising wahoo bite. A few blackfin tuna are mixed in. Sailfish are feeding in the same areas as the other blue water predators, and the bite has been from decent to incredible depending on the day.
Jay, of Bite Me Charters, reports that sailfish have been the big story of the week. Anglers released as many as 11 sails on trips this past week while trolling naked ballyhoo and dredge and squid chain teasers.
Good numbers of bailer dolphin are still in the area as well, and blackfin tuna and wahoo have been rounding out the catch lately.
Tom, of Tradewinds Tackle, reports that the spanish mackerel and bluefish bite is still on in the inlets and back in the sound. Anglers are hooking the fish while trolling Clarkspoons and casting small metal lures.
Some spanish and smaller bluefish are falling for metal lures worked in the surf as well.
Flounder are feeding in the surf and the sound, and small live baits or Gulps will tempt them to bite.
