The Dixie Chicken Fishing Funament was held Memorial Day weekend out of Harbourgate Marina in North Myrtle Beach. The Dixie Chicken offers both an Inshore and an Offshore Division.
The top finisher in the Inshore Division was Brandon Sauls from Ocean Isle Beach. He had a first place aggregate total of 8.30 lbs. The aggregate is determined by the total weight of one fish each from three different categories—flounder, trout, and spanish.
Sauls’ aggregate weight came from a flounder and a trout. He weighed in the tournament’s largest trout, a 6.50 lb. fish, and a 1.80 lb. flounder.
Second place in the Aggregate was Bobby Smith with a total of 3.74 lbs. All of his 3.74 lbs. came from one fish—the tournament’s heaviest flounder.
And third place in the Inshore Aggregate went to Chris Kelly, from North Myrtle Beach, with 3.68 lbs.
Michael Jenkins, from Little River, took top honors in the Spanish Division with a 1.42 lb. fish.
This year’s Junior Angler award in the Inshore Division, sponsored by West Marine, went to James Baldwin IV. Baldwin, from North Myrtle Beach, landed a 2.40 lb. flounder.
The Offshore Division’s big winners were “The Law” and Capt. Jeff Drake out of North Myrtle Beach. Drake brought in an aggregate total of 72.12 lbs. Part of their aggregate weight came from a 53.80 lb. wahoo, the tournament’s heaviest wahoo. “The Law” also weighed in a 14.30 lb. dolphin.
And Michelle Evans, fishing on the “The Law,” was the Lady Angler winner of the Offshore Division. The Lady Angler award was donated by Cole’s Jewelers.
In second place was “Sea Hunt” and Larry Lynn. Their total weight was 66.58 lbs. “Sea hunt” brought in the top fish in the Tuna Division with a 52.28 lb. fish. They also weighed in a 14.30 lb. dolphin.
And the third place aggregate boat was “Team Martini.” Capt. Jeff Martini, from North Myrtle Beach, brought in a total of 63.82 lbs. Part of Martini’s aggregate came from a 9.08 lb. king mackerel, the tournament’s heaviest king. The rest of the weight was made up by a 38.32 lb. wahoo and a 16.42 lb. dolphin.
The tournament’s heaviest dolphin weighed 28.48 lbs., and it was brought in by Bob Farris from Charlotte.
The Offshore Junior Angler was Blakeney Jackson, from North Myrtle Beach, with a 10.32 lb. dolphin. The Junior Angler award was donated by the Little River Inlet Saltwater Fishing Club.
One of the major sponsors of the event was Marine Service Center of Little River. They donated a Triton jon boat, motor, and trailer to the winner of the Flounder Frenzy portion of the tournament. The Flounder Frenzy was put on in part by the North Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce.

Proceeds from the event go to the Jim Caudle Reef. The Jim caudle Reef (PA01) is located 2.5 miles out of Little River Inlet.
