Ocean Isle June 22, 2006
Brant, at Ocean Isle Fishing Center, reports good-sized kings are finally making the move nearshore. There have been numerous catches of 15 to 20 lb. class kings in the 65 foot depth areas. The Jungle, Shark Hole, and the 65’ Hole are good spots to start.
Also in those areas there have been good numbers of 10 to 15 lb. dolphin and the occasional cobia. The cobia are now averaging 20 to 30 lbs.
The grouper were biting well earlier in the week in the 100’ depths.
Boats still going to the gulf stream are doing well with dolphin. They’re finding at least a few fish over 30 lbs. The best wahoo catches have been coming from the Blackjack Hole and the 100/400.
Stan, at Ocean Isle Fishing Center, reports the redfish bite has caught fire. Live menhaden fished on the bottom around the Little River jetties has been producing 25 to 35 inch class fish.
The jetties have also been a good spot for speckled trout if you have some live shrimp to offer.
Flounder in the 16 to 20 inch range are biting well in the creeks and inlets. The biggest fish have been going 6 lbs. this week.
A few mullet are showing up, but the pogies have been the “go to” bait.
On the beach the spanish are still hitting spoons for those who want to troll for them.
Will, at Ocean Isle Pier, reports a nice bottom bite. Trout and flounder are biting minnows and live shrimp. The trout are running 1-3 lbs., and most flounder are keepers.
The pompano are biting shrimp, with a citation pompano weighed this week.
