Seapath Spanish Mackerel Tournament 2006
Seapath Yacht Club in Wrightsville Beach held their annual Spanish Tournament on Saturday, June 17. Dirty water made fishing tough for the 150 entrants aboard 47 boats, but anglers still weighed in a few dozen fish.
Mike Reid won a new rod and reel combo for catching the heaviest spanish mackerel at 1.42 lbs. He was fishing on board the “Debt Finder,” run by Capt. Ryan Prevatte. The fish was caught on a clark spoon trolling close to the beach. This was the first tournament Reid ever fished.
Second place in the event went to Peter Myers, who weighed in a 1.3 pound fish. Jim Hobbs secured third place with a 1.22 pound fish.
Nearly all of the fish in the tournament bit trolled clark spoons.
The heavy rain in the weeks preceding the tournament dirtied the water and had the spanish mackerel scattered. Last year’s Seapath Spanish Tournament saw around 150 fish weighed, compared with around 40 for this year’s event.
Bluefish and lizard fish were caught in numbers, and two king mackerel were also brought in.
Although fishing was not red hot, the mood at the weigh in was extremely jovial. The weather was perfect, making for a beautiful day on the water. Participants remarked on what an enjoyable, family-oriented event the Seapath Spanish Tournament is. It is appropriate that the tournament took place on the Saturday preceding Father’s Day, as many father/son teams fished the event.
