Brant, at Ocean Isle Fishing Center, reports king mackerel fishing has been good in the 60 to 80 foot depths, such as the Shark Hole, 70 Foot Hole, and the Jungle.
Scattered weeds are blowing inshore, and this has been making trolling a little difficult.
The dolphin that were being caught mixed in the king mackerel spots have tapered off to almost nothing.
Pogies have been holding in good numbers near the Cape Fear River, but the kings have been hitting cigar minnows just as well recently.
Bottom fishing has been very good in the 80 to 100 foot depths, especially targeting gag grouper. Fish have been averaging 12 to 20 pounds.
Closer in, the spanish have been biting well in the 15 to 20 inch range, and they are holding in 40 to 50 foot of water in the 3 to 5 mile areas.
Kyle, at Ocean Isle Fishing Center, reports most of the action inshore has been with the consistent redfish bite. The jetties at Little River continue to be the place to find the big fish in the 28 to 32 inch range, with a few monsters mixed in.
One of the larger reds this week went 45 inches.
Smaller fish (in the 20 to 27 inch size) are in the waterway along the drop-offs and dock pilings. They’re hitting live pogies and mullet.
Flounder fishing has been slow with the water temperatures ranging from 84 to 88 degrees.
Will, at Ocean Isle Pier, reports that pompano (up to 1.5 lbs.), spadefish, spots, and whiting are hitting shrimp fished on bottom rigs.
Nice flounder (averaging 3-4 lbs.) are falling for live shrimp.
