Brant, at Ocean Isle Fishing Center, reports that spanish mackerel have been very thick along the beaches, with fish running in the 18 to 24 inch range.
King mackerel are scattered from right along the beach and inlets out to 100 foot of water. There have not been any big numbers of kings anywhere, but the bigger fish are beginning to show on the beach in such places as the Cape Fear River Channel.
Plenty of barracudas are around most of the offshore reefs, and they’re ready to eat anything.
Grouper are holding in 80 to 100 foot of water.
The gulf stream report this week is wahoo with some scattered catches of dolphin.
Stan, at Ocean Isle Fishing Center, reports that flounder are biting very well at the nearshore reefs. The average fish are 15 to 21 inches, and they are currently being found in large quantities. Use live mullet or pogies to trigger a strike from the flounder.
The jetties at Little River have been the best place for 8 to 15 pound redfish.
The Little River Inlet has been very good for spanish mackerel by trolling clark spoons or diving plugs.
Will, at Ocean Isle Pier, reports that small black drum, spots, and whiting are biting shrimp on the bottom.
Live shrimp are getting bites from flounder in the 1 to 2 pound range.
No spanish, sheepshead, or blues were caught this week.
