Tournament Report – Topsail Inshore Challenge
Scott Teeters, with daughter Olivia Teeters, took home the top spot in the 4th annual Topsail Inshore Challenge., bringing an aggregate weight to the scales of 14.54 lbs.
The Teeters, forming team “Marsh Fiddler,” had a plan for their day, starting off at a spot on the waterfront of Southport.
“I wasn’t even done tying my rigs for the day when Olivia hooked up with our first fish on her first cast,” says Teeters. The flatfish fell for a live menhaden on a Carolina rig, and it was enough to also win them third place in the Flounder TWT.
Teeters explained that bait was easy to catch, so after their flounder they went searching for redfish. He wanted to try a second location with some shallower water, but that search resulted in the team getting lodged on a low sandbar for thirty minutes or so before shoving off and out of the 6” of water.
Changing their plan, they hit up a second location and found the fish.

“We probably culled through 6 or 7 redfish until we had the ones we brought to weigh-in. Olivia caught one of the two we weighed in, and we caught everything we had before 8:30,” explained Teeters. Most of the redfish fell for live menhaden on a Carolina rig.
All the bites for the family happened within the first 30 minutes, and then it ceased. “We didn’t take another fish all day. That’s how crazy the bite was,” says Teeters, who ferried them to several more spots looking for fish, including Bald Head, Wrightsville, and back to Southport, before running to check in at Sear’s Landing in Topsail.
Scott Teeters credits their success to his daughter, age 16, that wanted to fish the whole series this year. “I drive the boat, catch the bait, and she does everything else. Ever since Wayne Crisco put her on a red a few years ago, she’s been hooked,” says Teeters with a laugh about his daughter, who also snagged Lady Angler for the event.
Rounding out the leaderboard, “Team Blackjack” weighed in at 12.64 lbs., and team “Flounder Nutz” took third with a close 12.36 lb. aggregate.
The Flounder TWT was won by team “Golly Whopper Chasin,” who took the top spot with a 4.31 lb. flounder, and team “Cape Fear RV and Marine” came in second, with a 3.89 lb. flatfish.
