Southport Fishing Center was the host site of this month’s SFC/Wildlife Bait and Tackle’s monthly flounder and trout tournament. In their inaugural event, they attracted thirteen boats and a 7 lb. class flounder and a 6 lb. class trout.
Glenn Hart and Mike Hill, both from Bolivia, NC, won the July 9 event with a 7.25 lb. flounder. They caught the fish near the Southport waterfront on a 7 inch mullet on the rising tide. They were fishing on Hill’s “Silver Bullet.” Angler Mike Hill also moved into fifth place in the Top Dog Tournament’s year round tournament.
Second place in the SFC/Wildlife Tournament went to Chris Rogers, from Lumberton, with a 4.75 lb. flounder.
The speckled trout division was won by a 6.15 lb. fish. Kyle Hughes, of Ocean Isle Beach, caught the fish at the Little River jetties on live shrimp during the rising tide.
Bruce Fields, from Carolina Beach, took second in the trout division with a 5.85 lb. trout.
A.J. Henderson (age 11), from Southport, won the Junior Angler Award. His 4.45 lb. flounder was also the overall third place flounder.
Michelle Beck, from Long Beach, won the Lady Angler Award with a 2.30 lb. speckled trout.
The SFC/Wildlife Bait and Tackle Flounder and Trout Tournaments are held every month through November. The August tournament, with registration on August 19 and fishing on August 20, will be hosted at Wildlife Bait and Tackle. For more information, you can call (910) 457-9903 or (910) 454-4000.
