The 21st annual CCSA/Boater’s World King Mackerel Tournament was held July 15-16 in Atlantic Beach. This year they attracted 133 boats to fish what had been a very hot king mackerel bite in the area. The kings seemed to know there was a tournament in town, and the bite slowed on Saturday; however, a total of 50 kings were weighed in with a 40 lb. class king winning the event.
The tournament winner came from “Hooligan,” a 31′ Yellowfin from Sunset Beach, NC. Capt. Joseph Winslow and Angler Fred Coyne brought in a 42.90 lb. king from the east side of the shipping channel. The hook-up came in the mid-morning, and the fish took a pogy trolled on top.
The “Hooligan” team, like others in the tournament, had a tough time finding bait. “Hooligan” worked for about 1.5 hours the night before to put some bait in the box.
They landed their winning king after a 30-minute fight, and the 40 lb. class fish brought them over $14,000 in prize money. Fred Coyne said of the win, “We won this one for Joe’s mother who broke her leg the day before.” He also thanked Yellowfin Boats for their support of “Hooligan.”
“Whats Fa Suppa,” a 26′ Sailfish, took second place with a 32.50 lb. king. Capt. Colin McDuffy, Angler Chuck Wiley, and Keith McDuffy, all from Pine Shores, NC, found the king in the shipping channel using a menhaden on the top.
The second place king almost didn’t make it in the boat. Keith McDuffy had gaffed the king and was bringing it over the gunnels when the gaff broke. The king fell back into the water, but it still had the hook in him. After a 10-minute fight, they brought the king back to the boat and used a short gaff they happened to have onboard. On their second place finish, Colin McDuffy thanked Coral Bay Marina for their support.
In third place was “Magic Stik, a 23′ Contender out of Pikeville, NC. Capt. Jeremy Pate, Angler Alan McCall, Bryan Pate, and Jeff Crocker caught a 27.02 lb. king south of Beaufort and about 10 miles out on a cigar minnow trolled on the flat line. “Magic Stik” is sponsored by McCall’s BBQ and Seafood.
In addition to the overall fourth place, “Miss Dawn” took the Lady Angler and the Senior Angler Award. Capt. Bill Hogshire and Angler Teresa Hogshire, from Tarboro, NC, caught a 26.50 lb. king just past the bar buoys in the shipping channel using a menhaden on the short top line.
“The Right One Baby” finished in fifth place with a 26.04 lb. king. Capt. Todd Matthews, from Swansboro, found the king at the Triple Nickels about 12 miles off in 70′ of water using a single pogy on the top.
“Brown Eyed Girl” won the 23 and Under Award with a 25.64 lb. king. Capt. Ed Radford and Kevin Radford caught the king at the East Rock out of Bogue Inlet on a menhaden.
The Junior Angler award went to Frankie Jones, from Snow Hill. Frankie (age 12) also won the Junior Angler award last year. She caught the 25.04 lb. king fishing inside the inlet with her dad, Capt. Ashley Jones, on the “Miss Teny.”
The Raleigh Salt Water Sportfishing Club Award went to “Ole.” Eddie and Michele Cameron, from Morehead City, found the 17.78 lb. king at the George Summerlin Reef.
The Carteret County Sportfishing Association Award went to “Just In Time.” Capt. Johnny Hudson caught his 18.08 lb. king on the east side of 30 Minute Rock using a plain pogy on the long line.
Here is the rest of the top ten: “King of Kings” in sixth place with a 25.88 lb. king; “Miss Teny” in seventh place with a 25.04 lb. king; “King Krazy” in eighth place with a 24.12 lb. king; “Overtime” in ninth place with a 23.76 lb. king; and “Double Up” in tenth place with a 23.60 lb. king.
