Southport August 4, 2005
Dave, at Ocean Crest Pier, reports a variety of fish biting. There are 3 to 4 lb. spanish still being caught light lining mullet. Flounder in the same size range are biting mullet on Carolina rigs on the bottom. Whiting and speckled trout are eating live shrimp, with the morning hours being best for the specks.
Sheepshead are on the pilings, but no one has targeted them with sand fleas or fiddlers.
Tarpon have been sighted, but none caught. King fishing has produced a 14 pounder this week.
Billie, at Dutchman Creek Bait and Tackle, reports a good spanish bite out around the Lockwood Folly sea buoy, as well as some king mackerel close to shore. A few trout are still being caught off the area piers on live shrimp. Flounder are being caught most anywhere, and there was a 10 pounder caught off the city pier this past weekend.
Bobby, at Long Beach Pier, reports an excellent week for all fishing but especially king mackerel. There were 13 kings landed, with the biggest going 29 lbs. Spanish up to 4 lbs. are being caught as well.
Plenty of bait is around, so the flounder fishing has picked up with some fish running 3.5 to 4.5 lbs. Speckled trout continue to bite early in the mornings on live shrimp, and some nice fish around 4 lbs. have been weighed in. Live shrimp is also catching a few big whiting up to around 2 lbs.
Big sheepshead have been seen around the pilings for those who target them with sand fleas, crabs, or barnacles. Other catches have been a few spadefish and black drum on shrimp.
Jimmy Price, at Wildlife Bait and Tackle, reports that flounder action continues to do well. Both Yaupon and McGlammery Reef have been steady producers. The usual inside areas are also doing well, with the Southport waterfront as good as any other place.
A good redfish bite has been around Brown’s Landing (and you can also pick up some flounder here).
Phizer’s Dock stays steady with black drum and sheepshead.
Spanish are just off the beach, with anglers finding 3-5 lb. fish on a regular basis.
And the speckled trout are still doing well around Battery Island, Striker’s Island, Buzzard Bay, and the Muddy Slough.
