Dave, at Ocean Crest Pier, reports fish are lining up for fall fishing, with a little of everything being caught. Speckled trout up to 4 lbs. are biting live mullet, which are running the beachfront pretty thick right now. Flounder, blues, and spanish mackerel are biting the mullet as well. Cut shrimp is catching some big whiting (from 1 to 2 lbs.). Pompano are still around biting sand fleas, and the sheepshead are around the pilings biting barnacles or fiddler crabs. As for big fish, tarpon are still rolling along the beach as well.
Jimmy Price, at Wildlife Bait and Tackle, reports that the flounder bite continues at both Yaupon and McGlammery Reef. These reefs have also seen some gray trout this past week, with guys finding them on fish jigs and sting silvers. Both reefs have recently produced some over-the-slot reds, and spanish continue to bite if you light line live bait to them.
The flounder action inside has been most prevalent around the Southport waterfront. Anthony Bridgeman landed a 5.94 lb. flounder near the waterfront last week to win the Jimmy price Flounder Tournament.
Sheepshead catches are coming from all around the area, including the ADM Pier, Phizer’s Dock, and the rocks at the entrance to Bald Head Island. Go with fiddler crabs or sand fleas.
Lots of black drum were reported this week. The big bumpers at the ADM Dock was one place, and Walden’s Creek was also hot. Go to Walden’s Creek and hit the oyster rocks with cut mullet, sand fleas, or fiddler crabs.
And a few speckled trout continue to bite in the bays and some of the area creeks.
Bobby, at Long Beach Pier, reports another good week of fishing despite the weather. The spanish are hitting live mullet and threadfins. Speckled trout prefer live shrimp. The flounder bite on the bottom has been best on live bait as well, and they’ve been weighing in up to 4 lbs. Bottom fishing has had a good variety of catches, with black drum, whiting, pompano, and at night a few spots showed up. Sheepshead are being caught around the pilings on crabs or barnacles.
Redd, at Yaupon Pier, reports that flounder have been the best bite this week. They hooked a few in the 3-5 lb. range. The pier also saw some nice sheepshead, with the biggest weighing up to 8 lbs. Otherwise, it’s been a few trout and a few spanish.
