Barry, at Cape Fear Marine and Tackle, reports the seas have kept most boaters inshore, but the drum and flounder fishing has kept them busy. Redfish are plentiful from Carolina Beach Inlet into the river and down in the back bays in the lower river. Speckled trout are mixed in and more abundant in the river.
Flounder fishing has been good in the inlet and Snow’s Cut, with several citations weighed in.
A few spot runs have been reported but nothing consistent yet. Gray trout should be waiting just off the beaches when the seas calm down.
Most of the kings being caught are nearshore off Oak Island. Water temperatures are staying up, so we should have a long fall season well into November.
Robbie, at Seagull Bait and Tackle, reports that the surf produced a little bit of everything this past week, with all species running a little small.
The recent blues have been small, with the biggest going less than 2 pounds. Prior to the rains, they had been seeing a fairly consistent bite of blues weighing up to 4 pounds.
The biggest pompano weighed in went only 1.5 pounds.
Quite a few flounder were caught out of the surf. Most of them were barely legal, but there were a few weighing in the 3-5 pound class.
Snow’s Cut had been doing well for flounder prior to the rains, with several fish in the 5-6 pound class weighed in. All of the recent freshwater has probably moved the fish down the river towards the Bald Head area.
There’s also been a good bite of reds in the river, but the trout that were biting are probably thrown off now from all of the freshwater.
As for bait, the north end and waterway has been full of mullet minnows.
