Topsail June 3, 2004
Chris, at East Coast Sports, reports that when the wind isn’t blowing it’s easy to find reds on the oyster bars. The inlet and creek mouths have been producing plenty of flounder. However, these flounder continue to be a little under the legal size limit. There are still lots of Spanish just off the beach, and Rich’s Inlet is once again a hot spot. Chris suggests trying from just behind the breakers to one mile out, and the new Yozuri plugs have been a hot item. The surf has been producing catches of sea mullet. There have also been some nice-sized pompano caught, mostly on sand fleas. The piers have had action that includes blues, mullets, spanish, and a couple of black drum. The king bite turned on over the weekend at 23 Mile Rock. He had guys reporting several snake kings caught in this area. Dolphin were another strong species at 23 Mile Rock. No real reports came in this week from the gulf.
Steve, at Seaview Fishing Pier, reports a good spot and mullet bite from the bottom fishermen using shrimp or bloodworms. The spot bite comes and goes, and this pace has been happening with regularity. A few blues and spanish are being caught, and the high tide has been the better producer. A couple of guys picked up a few black drum using sand fleas as bait. There were no kings to report this week.
Eric, at New River Marina, reports that speckled trout (up to the 6 lb. range) have been biting live shrimp, and black drum are biting in the bridge area on dead shrimp. The redfish bite has yet to turn on, and only undersized flounder are biting in the area so far. A few sheepshead are also being caught at the bridge, but there haven’t been any big weigh ins for this species yet. Spanish mackerel and bluefish are still being trolled up along the beaches, and the king mackerel bite is just a little further offshore. However, there have been no big catches of kings this week.
Jill, at Sneads Ferry Campground and Marina, reports that an angler on their pier caught and released a red drum measuring 47″. Otherwise, the pier has been seeing a few flounder and a few spots. There was a large flounder hooked, but they weren’t able to land the fish. Anglers staying in the campground went to the Christmas Rock and did excellent with black bass, snappers, and snake kings.
