Capt. Dave, of Wild Rover II Charters, reports that the gulf stream action has heated up around the Same Ole with catches of large wahoo. Offshore, the king mackerel are biting to the north and just offshore. Anywhere from 23 Mile Rock to any of the wrecks (WR-4, Schoolhouse, Dredge) have all been productive. And dolphin have been caught in numbers around the 30 mile mark. The grouper are biting well just about anywhere there is structure. Going 18 miles out seems to be the magic number for gags; however, there are plenty even closer than that. Reds are from 25 miles on out. Inshore, early last week there were plenty of sizable spanish and blues around in numbers. Once we had all that north wind and dirty water, the bite stopped. Trout, flounder, and sea bass are all biting on the bottom close in though.
Barry, at Cape Fear Marine and Tackle, reports that flounder, and all the other fall species, are biting real well. All of the known offshore spots have been particular productive, such as Sheepshead Rock, the Dredge Hole, and the other AR’s. These locations produced several citation-sized flounder over the past week. Gray trout are also here. Inside, the flounder bite has been in Snow’s Cut and up the waterway. Speckled and gray trout have been caught in the CB inlet. The kings showed up Sunday (a day after the tournament) at the mouth of the CF River and at Yaupon Reef. The bluewater fishing has seen plenty of wahoo, some yellowfins, and dolphin. There were also a couple of blue marlin hook-ups in the last week.
Mark, at Seagull Bait and Tackle, reports that the store has seen surf fishing producing a wide variety of nice catches. Guys have been bringing in citation-sized flounder, puppy drum, black drum, croakers, Virginia mullet, blues, and speckled trout. The offshore reefs are still loaded with gray trout, and the occasional flounder. CB Inlet is seeing flounder catches during the day and puppy drum at night. Snow’s Cut has also been producing some large flounder. Over the weekend, the boat ramp at the state park was the best bite for spots. Guys were loading up on spots in the one-pound range.
