Spooling reels from bulk and larger filler spools often leaves anglers mystified as to one detail—how much line actually went on to their reel. Sure anglers can guesstimate about how much line appears to be left on the spool versus how much it holds, but getting the number even close to right is about as easy as sinking a basketball from half-court.
South Chatham Tackle’s Bob Earl, manufacturer of the South Chatham Super Spooler, which the entire Fisherman’s Post team has used for over a year now and heartily endorses as the easiest method of home-spooling any type of reel, has recently come out with a Line Counter attachment for the spooler, taking the guesswork out of how much line a reel actually has on it.
Like most good products (the Super Spooler included), the Line Counter is a simple device. It consists of an attachment arm that goes on the spool rod of the Super Spooler, an analog counter, and a wheel that rests on the bulk or filler spool, spinning with the line and advancing the numbers on the counter.
To use it, anglers simply need to reset the numbers on the counter to zero (there’s a reset button), get their reel ready to go, run the line through the spooler’s tensioning pads, and wind away (or use an electric drill and the Super Spooler Spinning Reel Adapter to get a power assist for spinning reel spools).
The counter keeps accurate track of the line coming off the spool and onto the reel, allowing anglers to keep track of just how much line their reels have on them (and how accurate the reel manufacturer’s stated capacities are). This can be particularly useful when anglers want a specific relationship between braided line and mono backing or topshot when spooling saltwater reels.
When the reel or drill stops turning, the spring-loaded tension also stops the line spool and the counter, allowing anglers to get an accurate reading and eliminating the possibility of overrunning the spool.
Like the Super Spooler and South Chatham’s other products, the Line Counter is manufactured of heavy-duty materials to stand up to day in/day out use for years to come.
Anglers have the option of purchasing the Super Spooler/Line Counter combination, or buying the line counter separately if they already own a Super Spooler. Attaching it to an existing spooler only takes minutes.
