Kaya Creamer's 1.1 lb. spadefish earned her first place in the 5-9 Year-Old Division of the 16th Annual Carolina Beach Parks and Recreation Children's Fishing Day.

Over 180 children participated in Carolina Beach Parks and Recreation’s 16th Annual Youth Pier Fishing Tournament, held June 5th at Kure Beach Pier. Children and parents lined up for the event early, some waiting in line at 5:00 a.m. to receive a free rod and reel combo, t-shirt, and bait for the $1.00 entry fee.

Over 130 cans were also donated to the Federal Point Help Center and Food Bank throughout the event.

A variety of fish delighted the participants, with spade fish, flounder, and bluefish the most common catches over the day.

In the 5-9 Year-Old Division, Kaya Creamer weighed a 1.1 lb. spadefish to finish first, Ethan Gillespin took second, and Grace Garrison was third.

Conner Hickman’s .95 lb. flounder topped the 10-15 Year-Old competitions. Madison Dibendetto took second, and Nick Skinner was third.

A variety of raffle prizes were also given away over the course of the day.

The Recreation Department would like to thank all of their sponsors who made this event possible, including the Town of Carolina Beach, Kure Beach Fishing Pier, Island Tackle and Hardware, Blackburn Brothers Seafood, Bass Pro Shops, Mike Harrison of the Got-Em-On Live Bait Club, and the Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee members who volunteer their time to the community.
