The 15th annual Bald Head Island Fishing Rodeo, held June 2-4, attracted 18 boats to fish this year. The tournament offers two days of fishing, with a meat fish division (tuna, dolphin, and wahoo) and a billfish release division.
The overall winner of the tournament was “Desperado.” Ken Coffer, from Carolina Beach, took the $4800 first place prize with a two-day total of 273.68 lbs. of tuna, dolphin, and wahoo.
“Desperado” also gathered a number of other awards, including the heaviest dolphin of the day on Saturday. They weighed in a 36.51 lb. dolphin.
Also on Saturday, Ken Coffer Jr. took the Junior Angler award with a 36.12 lb. dolphin. Kim Coffer weighed in a 36.98 lb. dolphin on Friday that brought her the Lady Angler award.
The overall second place went to “Pure Country.” Jerry Hedge, from Wallace, NC, weighed in a two-day total of 196.46 lbs. The boat also recorded the heaviest dolphin of the day on Friday with a 32.56 lb. fish.
“Carolina Girl” came in third. John Harris and crew, out of Wilmington, had a combined weight of 171.49 lbs. Part of their total weight came from a 41 lb. wahoo weighed in on Friday that was the heaviest wahoo of the day.
Ben Smith and the “Stream Weaver,” out of Wrightsville Beach, came in fourth with a 106.54 lb. weight total.
The Fayetteville-based “Reel Quick” and Chris Bailey took fifth with a total weight of 106.10 lbs.
Friday’s heaviest tuna was a 25.13 lb. fish weighed in by Frank Wymbs, from Montauk, NY, on the “Osprey.”
The heaviest tuna on Saturday came from “Intimidator” and Don Dry. Dry weighed in a 37.82 lb. tuna.
There were no wahoo caught on Saturday.
There were also no billfish recorded over the weekend’s fishing.
The 2006 Bald Head Island Fishing Rodeo weighed 58 fish for a total weight of 1,293.12 lbs.
