“O Lucky Me” proved to be lucky indeed Saturday as its Raleigh-based crew caught and released a blue marlin to win the 10th annual Big Rock Blue Marlin Lady Angler Tournament.
The team hooked and released a blue marlin two minutes before the Wilmington-based “Celebration” crew managed the same feat. Both teams finished with 400 points, but the “O Lucky Me” crew won because they reached 400 points first.
“O Lucky Me,” captained by Rocky Hardison of Beaufort, released its blue marlin after a 13-minute fight. The “Celebration” hook-up, which occurred one minute after the “O Lucky Me” hook-up, had a 14-minute fight.
“O Lucky Me” collects $5,843.75 for winning the Lady Angler billfish purse. The one-day competition had 55 entries and included a winner-take-all purse for largest tuna, wahoo, and dolphin catches.
“Commissions” angler Sara Webb of Wilson helped her team win $1,947.92 by reeling in the biggest wahoo. Webb’s catch topped the scales at 18.20 pounds.
The “C-Mist” captured the dolphin division’s $1,947.92 prize. “C-Mist” angler Laura Gable of Raleigh caught a 38.05-pounder.
No team managed to land a tuna. The prize money in that division will carry forward to next year.
The 10th annual Lady Angler competition helps kick off the 49th annual Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament, a six-day competition that starts Monday, June 11, at 9:00 a.m.
