Inspired by West Coast “wahoo bombs,” Hampstead’s Blue Water Candy Lures has modified a pair of their most popular trolling lures and added some unique rigging to create the Jag-A-Hoo and Jag-A-Rita.
Both lures share a similar concept—a hook-mounted swivel permits a gold willowleaf blade to rotate behind the bait to add flash, vibration, and call fish in from a distance in deep, clear water.
The Jag-A-Hoos utilize the original Blue Water Candy Jag head, a 3 1/4 oz. trolling lure that’s been responsible for the demise of many a wahoo and bluefin tuna. The skirt has been trimmed down from the normal Jag to even with the bend of the hook to avoid fouling the spinning blade. Rigged on 275 lb. cable with a 900 lb. solid ring and an 8/0 Mustad hook, the Jag-A-Hoos are built to handle the razor sharp maw of their namesake species and available in four wahoo-approved colors.
Instead of the hair skirts found on the usual Jag, these lures feature dressings of Bling (a flashy pearlescent material) or Mylar, both for flash and to hold up to multiple wahoo strikes.
Jag-A-Ritas are very similar, but built around the company’s ‘Tweener head, a 2 oz. version of the Jag. They’re also available in four colors, but in some brighter hues to appeal to big gaffer dolphin. They’re rigged on 100 lb. mono with a 7/0 Mustad Hook, with the exception of the blue/black model (which wahoo like too much to rig on mono).
Both lures can be trolled at conventional ballyhoo speeds, or higher speeds up to 12 knots, and are excellent casting baits for wahoo, dolphin, and more. A bead and fixed crimp on the leader just in front of the lure heads keeps them as one compact package to increase casting distance.
Jag-A-Hoos and Jag-A-Ritas are hitting local tackle shops now. Anglers can learn more or check out more photos of the lures at www.bluewatercandylures.com.
