Have you ever seen a kids face light up when he or she catches his or her first fish ever? If you were at Bogue Inlet Pier from 9 – 11 am on Saturday June 11 you would have found out for sure! That was when we held the Annual Emerald Isle Kids Fishing Derby. 32 young anglers showed up for a gorgeous day on the pier. A light breeze punctuated the sunshine and made for some great action. The first fish was caught in less than five minutes by Davis Hardee of Greenville and for that he won a fishing rod from Island Harbor Marina of Emerald Isle. Victoria Houseworth of Hubert caught the most fish (33) and won a 6 hour Eco-Tour from Pelican Charters and Capt Paul Dunn of Beaufort. Ben Skiba of Cedar Point caught a 13 inch shark for the biggest fish and he won a Zebco fishing rod. Alexander Brown of Raleigh won a Zebco fishing rod for the second biggest fish (10 1/2 inches) and JR Broadus of Peletier won a $10 gift certificate from Village Market of Emerald Isle. Max Egerton of Emerald Isle caught a spot at the last minute and for that he won a Plano Tackle Box. Jordan Froscher of Newport caught the only sea mullet of the day (7 ¼ inches) and won a spool of Berkely Trilene and practice casting plugs. Patrick Butler caught the smallest fish ( 3 inch spadefish) and also won Berkley Trilene and practice plugs. Also winning spools of Trilene were Jon Guarino of Emerald Isle (biggest spot 5 inches) , Trey Moritz of Emerald Isle (biggest croaker 5 inches), Hunter Draughon of Morehead City (biggest hogfish 9 inches) and Samantha Kirk of Hubert (biggest spadefish 6 ½ inches). In addition; all participating kids went home with a prize just for showing up.
Thanks to all the kids who came and made this a great event. Special thanks to our sponsors who donated prizes of materials: The Reel Outdoors, Cap’n Willis’ Seafood Market, Island Harbor Marina, Village Market, Mimi’s Restaurant and Flip Flops all from Emerald Isle, NC Waterman.com and Pelican Charters with Capt Paul Dunn of Beaufort.
Also thanks go out to our volunteers who helped keep the event running; Dr Bogus, Sarah Bellanca, Kip Baker, Dale Collins, Coast Guard Station Emerald Isle and extra special thanks to Bill Hitchcock of NC Waterman.com for helping to recruit a fantastic bunch of folks that showed up and aided with baiting hooks, unhooking fish, taking pictures and generally adding to the festive atmosphere. Without all the help of our volunteers this event would not have been nearly as enjoyable for everybody.
