The 2005 Mercury Redbone Cape Fear Red Trout Celebrity Classic was held November 3-5 out of Seapath Marina in Wrightsville Beach. The tournament raised over $35,000 for research for Cystic Fibrosis, the number one genetic killer of children in the US.
The tournament structure features two anglers per boat, and each of the boats are manned by a local guide. It is an all release tournament. Points are awarded for each trout and redfish that meets tournament minimum lengths.
Points are awarded for catching fish on the fly (100), spin/plug (75), or general/bait (50).
The most redfish award went to Josh Timbers with 8 successful releases. Timbers also took home the largest redfish award, a 29″ fish. He was fishing with Capt. Douglas Cutting.
The most trout went to Richard Peterson. Peterson landed 21 trout while fishing with Capt. Ricky Kellum of Speckled Specialist Charters.
The largest trout measured 23.5″, and it was caught by Jot Owens III. He was fishing with Capt. Jot Owens IV.
The bait division champion was Jeff Musgrove with 1200 points (24 fish). Musgrove was fishing with Capt. Ricky Kellum.
The spin division champion was Keith Gallaher with 1050 points (14 fish). Gallaher was fishing with Capt. Stu Caulder of Gold Leader Guide Service.
The fly division champion was Nicholas Pierce with 800 points (8 fish). Pierce was fishing with Capt. John Huff of Circle H Charters.
The Lady Grand Angler went to Jeanette Gallaher with 600 points. She was fishing with Capt. Stu Caulder.
The first runner up team went to Keith and Jeannette Gallaher with a combined 1425 points.
The first runner up angler went to Nicholas Pierce with 1200 points.
The Team Grand Champions were Tom Reeves, Nicholas Pierce, and Capt. John Huff with 1750 points
The Team Champion angler went to Jeff Musgrove with 24 trout and one redfish for a total of 1750 points.
