Barry, at Cape Fear Marine and Tackle, reports fishing has been rather slow, and anglers are doing more preparing than fishing. Bluefish were reported south of Southport, so Carolina Beach anglers shouldn’t have much longer to wait. Red drum are being caught mostly on an incoming tide in creeks near the inlets. The fishing in the river has slowed, more than likely because of the rain. King mackerel fishing is taking place 40 to 50 miles offshore, and as long as the warm water is there the Frying Pan Tower is a good place to look. The kings are still running very small though. Gulf stream fishing is still taking place beyond 60 miles, and catches include yellowfin tuna and wahoo.
Steve, at Seagull Bait and Tackle, reports that whiting are being caught in the surf, off the pier, and down the river. Cut shrimp is the bait to use. The surf has also seen some small blues, from 1/2 lb. to 1.5 lbs., and the piers reported some blowfish.
There’s been a few puppy drum caught in the surf and in the river recently. Go with shrimp or Tsunami grubs. No flounder catches on hook and line, but the netters are reporting that they are around. Bait is just starting to show up inside, with some small menhaden and mullet minnows.
Offshore, the tower has seen lots of catches of yellowfins. Bottom fishermen are also finding sea bass and beeliners at the tower.
