Trey, at Reel Bait and Tackle, reports excellent flounder fishing both inside and outside the inlets. Snow’s Cut and the Cape Fear River have been producing lots of fish, with one 50 flounder day reported. Flounder are also biting well in the surf and at nearshore structure such as Sheepshead Rock.
Carolina-rigged mullet and peanut pogies are the best baits.
Puppy drum are biting well in the surf and at many of the same inshore spots where the flounder are. Live and cut baits will get the drum’s attention.
Spanish mackerel fishing has been on and off. The key to success is finding clean water in the early morning or evening. Schools of bait on the surface are good signs spanish are present. Trolled spoons and live baits fished on the surface are top choices for spanish.
Kings and dolphin are biting well around the Schoolhouse on live baits. Another good bet for locating dolphin is to head 23+ miles out and look for weed lines.
Bottom fishing has been good, with excellent catches of gag grouper in the 35 mile range.
Bruce, at Flat Dawg Charters, reports a few redfish being caught in the river and waterway. There is plenty of mullet starting to move around and lots of pogies, but they are of the offshore variety.
Flounder fishing has produced some nice three pound fish, but the big ones have yet to show so far.
Some nice croakers are biting, but the speckled trout have shut down.
The freshwater from all the rain is finally starting to move out, so fishing should pick up.
Anthony, at Kure Beach Pier, reports lots of action on the bottom, with croaker, spot, ladyfish, and small sea bass all biting shrimp.
A few keeper flounder were caught this week.
Barnacles fished near the pilings are working well on sheepshead (up to 6 lbs.).
King fishing has been slow this week.
