Barry, at Cape Fear Marine and Tackle, reports plenty of blues and spanish with some small kings mixed in right outside the inlets hitting clark spoons and yo-zuri diving plugs. Some bigger kings were caught at AR382 and further out around the shoals. Cobia are hanging around the nearshore wrecks as they move north. In the gulf stream the boats were covered up in Dolphin up to 40 lbs. but very few tuna and wahoo most likely due to the great dolphin bite. Inside, the flounder bite is getting a little better. David Brehmer weighed in a 6 lb. 2 oz. flounder on 5/28. The river is still the place for drum and flounder as well.
Mark, at Seagull Bait and Tackle, reports that the flounder bite on the beach has come on strong. There have been several fish in the 16 to 17 inch range landed over the weekend (the bite started on Friday). Sunday night there were a number of big pompano caught, weighing up to 3 lbs. The bite of big blues seems to have slowed down, but they’re still picking up small ones. You can also expect an occasional red drum, black drum, and sea mullet.
The river has also seen an improved flounder bite, with many in the 16 to 17 inch range. The heaviest of the weekend weighed 6 lbs. The spanish are still just off the beach. Small kings are mixed in. For the larger kings (up to 20 lbs.) it has been necessary to go off 25+ miles. Further offshore, the dolphin bite has been strong, and there’s still a couple of wahoo.
