Barry, at Cape Fear Marine and Tackle, reports kings and dolphin have been hot from 5 miles on out, with a good bite off the Dredge Wreck. A few sailfish are moving in with the warmer waters. Flounder fishing has picked up in the inlets. Most fish are keeper size now, and they’re running up to 5 lbs. Spanish fishing is still good outside the inlets, but the cobia seemed to have slowed with the warmer waters. Menhaden are scattered, and the mullet aren’t moving around to get things really hot yet.
Mark, at Seagull Bait and Tackle, reports that the wind basically shut down the fishing on Sunday, but before that they were catching some flounder out of the inlet and Snow’s Cut. Like last week, most are still small, but they did weigh in a few over 3 lbs., and the biggest of the week was in the 6 lb. class. Puppy drum and black drum are scattered inside, with most catches coming from the river.
The surf has seen Virginia mullet, pompano, bluefish, and black drum. They also picked up a few flounder from the surf this week. Spanish are just off the beach. Kings have been in close, including a 36 lb. king caught from Kure Beach Pier. Most of the kings in close are little snake-size, and it’s been necessary to go farther off for a shot at any big kings.
