Harry G, at Seagull Bait and Tackle, reports that there have been a lot of flounder caught this past week. There were several in the 3 to 4 lb. range weighed in, and the heaviest of the week was in the 9 lb. class. He suggests that the recent full moon helped the flounder fishing. The top two spots are in CB Inlet and Snow’s Cut.
Go with live bait for the flounder: menhaden and mud minnows. There are plenty of menhaden around, both in the river and in the dredge pond. The finger mullet are still a little small, but they should be the right size in about two weeks.
Some pompano and lots of croakers are coming from the surf. Guys have also been hooking several small sharks at night. The piers have been catching blues, with a few spanish mixed in, off of gotcha plugs.
Barry, at Cape Fear Marine and Tackle, reports lots of wind slowed the fishing, but the fish are still there. Kings and dolphin are along the wrecks and live bottoms, while the cobia have seemed to move on. Blues and spanish are along the beachfronts, and flounder fishing has picked up so that most fish are keepers. Quite a few over 5 pounds were weighed in this week. Surf fishing has produced mostly blues, but there should be some flounder and pompano as well. Down the river the action has been speckled trout and red drum. And no real good reports from the gulf stream due to the weather.
