The 5th annual Carteret County Sportfishing Association/Boater’s World Cobia Tournament saw several large cobia weighed in over the weekend of June 3-5. Approximately 30 boats fished two days and landed a total of 17 cobia. By the end of the weekend, it would take a 40 lb. class cobia to get on the leader board.
The overall winner was Matt Glancy of Beaufort. Glancy, fishing on the “North River Fishing Team,” landed an 81.85 lb. cobia on Sunday that would prove to be the tournament’s largest fish. The 80 lb. class cobia bit a shad while Glancy was anchored up behind the Cape. The fight lasted about 45 minutes. Glancy also weighed in a 64 lb. cobia on Saturday.
Second place went to Phillip Yarborough from Morehead City. Yarborough landed a 70.45 lb. cobia caught on a whole squid.
Eck Faulconer took third place with a 62.70 lb. cobia. Fourth place went to Greg Marquart with a 56.80 lb. fish. Jeremy Cannon took fifth place with a 56.65 lb. cobia.
Randy Rouse, from La Grange, NC, took home several prizes. His 55.95 lb. cobia was the sixth heaviest fish. Rouse also landed the heaviest spanish (5.50 lbs.) and the heaviest blue (10.65 lbs.). All of his three top fish were caught on Saturday using shad.
The final places of the leader board are as follows: Noah Lynk, from Beaufort, in seventh with a 55.45 lb. cobia; Tyler Thomas in eighth with a 54.80 lb. cobia; Jeff Feuling in ninth with a 49.35 lb. cobia; and Kemp Styron in tenth with a 43.15 lb. cobia.
