Costa Del Mar’s new Double Haul Sunglasses are among several new frame styles the company has added to their extensive product line for 2012. Named for a fly fishing cast that takes time to master, Costa is clearly proud of the Double Haul, which is ideal for anglers with larger faces.
Key among the Double Haul’s features are two sets of vents on the outside of each lens.
“The vents direct air down the side of your face,” Costa Rep Bryan Williams says, “so when you’re running a boat or in the wind it doesn’t wrap around the lens and dry out your eyes.”
The new frames also incorporate two types of high-tech rubber, Megol and Hydrolite, to keep the glasses secure on an angler’s head, sweaty or not.
“The Megol is on the nosepiece, and the Hydrolite is incorporated into the ear and temple area,” Williams continued. “They don’t get sticky or anything when you’re sweating. The glasses just stay in place.”
Costa’s 580G (Glass) and 580P (Polycarbonate) lenses are both available, and they offer similar optics with different sets of benefits. The 580P’s are ANSI impact certified and feature an oleophobic coating that resists water, oil, and grease (like that left by fingerprints).
“You can literally pour water on these glasses, shake them, and they’ll be totally dry,” Williams reports, “and they’re a lot lighter than glass.”
Anglers can choose between amber, copper, or gray lenses in the 580P, or they can go with the 580G to add stylish green, silver, or blue mirror lenses as options.
“The blue mirrors are based around the gray lenses, so they’re better for offshore,” added Williams. “The Green and Silver Mirror are the copper lenses, so they’re better for inshore or sight fishing applications.”
Whether glass or polycarbonate, the 580 lenses offer benefits other company’s glasses can’t boast. Named for the wavelength of the yellow sunlight that the 580’s are particularly adept at blocking, they offer enhanced eye protection and better visibility at the same time.
“The 580’s eliminate the yellow light that comes from the sun,” Williams continued, “so all the other colors stand out more, especially the ones close to yellow on the spectrum like green. Everything has better contrast—it’s like HDTV versus standard.”
Made just outside Daytona Beach Florida, Costa Del Mar’s manufacturing utilizes human hands instead of machines wherever possible.
“Each pair of glasses goes through approximately 10 people’s hands before they go in the box,” Williams said.
Like all Costa Del Mar glasses, the Double Hauls offer a lifetime warranty against manufacturer’s defects. Check them and Costa’s many other frame styles out at a local dealer, or you can view more at www.costadelmar.com.
