Team Marcia D, crewed by Capt. Perry Johnston, Don Wilsey, and Kristen Johnston (age 14) of Oak Island, NC, caught a kingfish Monday, Oct. 10, weighing 35 lbs. 3 oz. to win the Wal-Mart FLW Kingfish Tour event in Morehead City, where a field of professional kingfish anglers competed for a share of a $300,000 purse. Team Marcia D earned a first-place check for $70,000.
“We honestly didn’t think our fish from yesterday would hold up,” said Team Marcia D member Don Wilsey of Southport. “We thought it would be a top-five fish, since the weather’s been bad, but historically, a fish like that around here in October wouldn’t hold up.”
P. Johnston commented after the win, “The 33′ Hydra Sport in the best king mackerel boat on the market.”
Rounding out the top five teams were Team Slip N Slide captained by Tom Aberle of Wilmington, NC (33 pounds, 10 ounces, $35,000) Team Streaker captained by Roger Walker of Jacksonville Beach, FL (31 pounds, 1 ounce, $15,250); Team Early Riser captained by John Parks of Jacksonville, NC (27 pounds, 12 ounces, $16,500); and Team Young Guns captained by Harvey Way Jr. of Bunnell, FL (27 pounds, 10 ounces, $10,750).
Team Hannon’s Cannon captained by Kevin Hannon of Seminole, Fla., finished highest in the points standings at the end of the 2005 season. The team earned 544 out of a possible 600 points after finishing this event in 13th place with a kingfish weighing 25 pounds.
