The 13th Annual Friendly City Speckled Trout Tournament took place on November 13th in some very raw conditions. Weigh-in took place at Caspers Marina in Swansboro, and most anglers coming in looked relieved to be back at the dock.
The team of Capt. Mike Taylor, Capt. Jeff Cronk, and John Willard Dudley used live shrimp, mirrolures, and grubs to slay the specks and the competition. Their three fish aggregate of 14.56 lbs. took first place and $770. Mike Taylor’s 5.2 lb. trout earned him another $720 in the big fish tournament within a tournament.
David Behan took 2nd place in the aggregate with a total weight of 8.12 lbs. Ricky Kellum took 3rd with a three fish total of 6.84 lbs. He also had the second heaviest trout, taking 2nd place in the TWT, with a 3.46 lb. trout. Kellum said they caught small fish all day, but conditions in the New River were as bad as he has ever seen it with the 20-30 mph winds that prevailed most of the day.
The 3rd biggest trout went to Richard Peterson with a 3.3 lb. trout.
The fourth through tenth place finishers in the three fish aggregate were only separated by 1.34 lbs. John Haslip’s 6.76 lbs. earned him fourth, and fifth went to Doug Kellum with 6.64 lbs.
Sixth through tenth went to Jody Floyd, Danny Sabroko, Lindsay Sutherland, Mike Halloman, and Phillip Whiting. Dianne Parkins took the Lady Angler award with a 2 lb. speck, and Ryan Goff was awarded Junior Angler with his .96 lb. trout.
