The crew from “Capt’n Hook” were the big winners in the 2005 East Coast Got-Em-On King Classic, held July 8-9. “Capt’n Hook,” a 31′ Contender, beat out a field of 186 boats with a 37.90 lb. king. Capt. David Hooks Jr., Skip Canipe, and Andy Penninger, all from Ocean Isle Beach, found the winning fish at the Georgetown tideline with a hook up at approximately 8:30 am.
That morning they had trailered their boat to Murrell’s Inlet, and it was just outside Murrell’s Inlet that they found bait.
Once hooked, the king managed to get tangled up in the lines of two other boats. The boats cut their lines so that “Capt’n Hook” could bring in their king. Capt. Hooks said he appreciated the quick willingness of “Gracy Mae” and “Knot At Work” to help them out.
The king hit a live pogey on the longline, and it took about 30 minutes to bring him in. According to Hooks, there was a strong morning bite at Georgetown for about two hours, and then it shut down. With the big fish in the boat, the crew leisurely made their way to weigh-in, dodging a few storms on the way.
The “Capt’n Hook” walked away with over $30,000 in prize money for their 37.90 lb. king. They gave credit for their win to their sponsors: Mercury Motors, Contender, GPS Store, and Power Marine.
In second place was Wilmington-based “Much 2 Reel,” a 26′ Regulator The crew of Brian Cheshire, Monica Cheshire, and Eric Gowdy caught a 33.80 lb. king off of Topsail Inlet. The king hit a live menhaden on the top.
They had rode down to Bogue Inlet earlier in the day, but hooked the big king at about 2:30 on their way back south. Eric Gowdy took approximately 15 minutes to bring the fish in. On the second place finish, Brian Cheshire thanked their sponsor of Smithfield’s Chicken and Bar-B-Q.
Brett and Alan Barnes, from Wilmington, took third place fishing on their 25’Contender “Hot Rod.” They caught the 33.60 lb. king at Georgetown on a menhaden on the top. They hooked the king at 10:15.
Fourth place went to “Brief Relief” with a 32.60 lb. king. Gardner Welty, Steven Welty, Hunter Tull, and Elizabeth Lee, all from Wilmington, caught the king at the 30/30. The king hit a menhaden on the downrigger.
“Fishin’ Physician,” with Kendall Suh (from Ocean Isle Beach) and Jim Aikens (from Wilmington), took fifth place. Their 32.00 lb. king was caught off of Georgetown with a pogey on the downrigger. Suh said the Georgetown bite was strong, and they had three nice fish in the box by 7:45.
Winning the 23 and Under Division, with this year’s guaranteed purse of $3,500, was the “Git-R-Done.” Ty Cobb and Nicole Greeson, from Carolina Beach, caught their 24.74 lb. king off of Topsail with a yellow and green-skirted pogey on the longline. It was the first line of the day they put out.
David Jackson (age 12), from Wilmington, won the Junior Angler. He was fishing with his father, Mike Jackson, on the “Live Line.” They caught the 23.05 lb. king at Carolina Beach Inlet with a pogey on the downrigger.
The Lady Angler Award went to Mary Force. Force, from Bolivia and fishing on the “Squeeze Play,” caught the 27.90 lb. king off of Georgetown.
The Got-Em-On Live Bait Club puts on this tournament with the help of the Carolina Beach and Kure Beach Fire Departments.
