Ryan, of Hatteras Jack, reports that panfish like croaker, sea mullet, and spot are making up most of the catch for local surf anglers at present. Shrimp and bloodworms are fooling the bottom feeders.
Anglers wading around Oregon Inlet have been connecting with some flounder, speckled trout, and puppy drum, primarily while working soft plastic baits.
Sheepshead are feeding around the pilings of the Bonner Bridge and taking an interest in live fiddler crabs and sand fleas.
There’s still a solid red drum bite going on in the sound from Rodanthe to Avon, particularly at night. Most of the reds are falling for cut baits and finger mullet.
Big numbers of flounder have moved into the sound as well, and giggers are connecting with plenty. Hook-and-line anglers can toss live baits or soft plastics to tempt bites from the flatfish.
Ervin, of The Fishin’ Hole, reports that anglers continue to hook spot, croaker, sea mullet, and other panfish while soaking shrimp and bloodworms in the local surf.
Red drum are feeding in the sound behind the island, and they’re biting cut mullet in the evening hours.
Sarah, of Frank and Fran’s, reports that anglers are connecting with some sea mullet, spot, and croaker while casting from the beachfront around Avon. Shrimp and bloodworms are fooling all three.
A few citation-class red drum have been released by anglers surf fishing around Hatteras Inlet.

Bob, of Frisco Tackle, reports that fishing has been a bit slow recently, but anglers are still hooking some fish from the local beachfront. Sea mullet, spot, croaker, and a few pompano have been biting shrimp and sand fleas. Some flounder are taking an interest in strip baits and soft plastics.
Anglers fishing the sound are hooking decent numbers of puppy drum on spoons and other artificials.
Kyle, of Frisco Rod and Gun, reports that anglers are landing sea mullet, spot, croaker, and other panfish while surf fishing along Hatteras Island’s southern shores. Most are falling for shrimp and bloodworms. A few pompano, flounder, and bluefish have been mixed in at Frisco and Hatteras.
Anglers fishing the sound side of the island from shore and boats continue to find plenty of puppy drum action, with gold spoons, soft plastics, and a variety of baits fooling the pups.
When conditions have allowed the offshore boats out recently, there’s been some excellent wahoo action along with a few dolphin. Some billfish are still in the mix, and local boats have released both blue and white marlin recently along with the meatfish. Most of both are falling for naked and skirted ballyhoo.
Bottom fishing offshore is producing plenty of action with tilefish and amberjacks.
Jay, of Bite Me Charters, reports that anglers are still hooking dolphin while trolling off Hatteras Inlet (most bailers but a few gaffers still in the mix). Some wahoo and blackfin tuna are joining in on the action, and all three are taking an interest in naked and skirted ballyhoo (with some wahoo also on high-speed trolling lures). Billfish are still around as well, and anglers have seen and released sailfish and white and blue marlin in recent days.
