Ryan, of Hatteras Jack, reports that anglers are primarily connecting with primarily bottomfish like spot, sea mullet, and croaker while soaking baits in the local surf. Shrimp and bloodworms are producing most of the action.
Some large bluefish have been feeding just off the beachfront and falling for cut baits.
Spanish mackerel are also chasing bait up and down the shoreline and falling for metal casting jigs.
Anglers fishing the Bonner Bridge catwalk are catching solid numbers of sheepshead while fishing sand fleas and other crustacean baits close to the pilings.
Steve, of The Fishin’ Hole, reports that there have still been some slot and over-slot red drum biting in the surf around Rodanthe, with the best action after sunset recently. Cut baits are fooling most of the drum. There’s been some decent drum fishing in the sound lately as well.
Spot, croaker, pompano, and sea mullet are also feeding in the breakers and biting shrimp and bloodworms.
Lance, of Rodanthe Pier, reports that the pier saw its first king mackerel of the season last week, and anglers have also landed some 10+ lb. bluefish while live-baiting from the end.
Plug casters are hooking smaller bluefish and a few spanish mackerel.
Bottom fishing has primarily been producing croaker and other panfish.
Ginger, of Frank and Fran’s, reports that anglers are hooking some pompano and sea mullet while surf fishing around Avon. Shrimp and sand fleas are fooling the pomps and mullet.
Some bluefish are also falling for bottom rigs, and anglers are connecting with the blues and some spanish while working metal casting lures from the beach and pier.
Anglers fishing the sound are hooking some puppy drum and gray trout.
Bev, of Frisco Tackle, reports that there’s been some good pompano fishing at Frisco and Hatteras recently. Some bluefish, puppy drum, and sea mullet are mixed in. Shrimp, sand fleas, and cut baits are fooling the fish in the surf.
Anglers casting artificials and fishing bait in the sound are finding action with puppy drum and flounder.
Kyle, of Frisco Rod and Gun, reports that surf casters are still seeing plenty of pompano (some 2+ lb. citations) and sea mullet while soaking baits from the Frisco and Hatteras beachfront. Shrimp and sand fleas are fooling both.
Some bluefish and spanish mackerel have been around as well, and they’re biting metal casting jigs that anglers are working from the beach around Hatteras and Buxton.
Red drum are on the feed in the sound and around Hatteras Inlet. Anglers are hooking slot and over-slot reds on baits and artificial lures like gold spoons.
A few cobia are still feeding around the inlet and biting baits along with bucktails and other artificials.
The offshore fleet continues to see some solid action with dolphin, wahoo, and blackfin tuna, along with a few billfish releases.
JAM, of Teach’s Lair, reports that anglers continue to see some excellent pompano action while surf fishing at Hatteras Village. Some sea mullet are mixed in, and shrimp and sand fleas are fooling both fish. A few puppy drum, bluefish, and flounder have been mixed into the surf catch.
Cobia are still around and feeding just off the beaches and inlet. Anglers are hooking them on bucktail jigs and while bottom fishing with live and dead baits.
The offshore fleet continues to find plenty of dolphin along with a few blackfin tuna.
Bottom fishing offshore is adding some rosefish to the boxes.
Jay, of Bite Me Sportfishing, reports that there are still plenty of dolphin feeding in the Gulf Stream off Hatteras, and anglers who find large schools are putting solid numbers on the docks.
Billfish are still around, and several sailfish and blue and white marlin have been released by boats both dolphin fishing and pulling billfish-specific spreads.
Deep-drop fishing offshore is producing plenty of action with tasty bottom dwellers like rosefish, tilefish, and grouper.
Jeremy, of Calypso Charters, reports that anglers are still seeing some dolphin action while trolling offshore of Hatteras Inlet, but it’s a bit slower than in previous weeks (and more bailers than gaffers are now around). Anglers are hooking the dolphin while trolling naked and skirted ballyhoo or pitching cut baits and squid to schools of fish around the boats and other floating objects.
Trolling is also producing some blackfin tuna and scattered wahoo. Billfish are still around, and boats are adding some blue and white marlin releases to their meatfish hauls. Ballyhoo and skirted lures are fooling the other blue water predators as well.
