Eddie, of Hatteras Jack, reports that anglers saw some solid fishing for large red drum from the northern beaches last week, but it’s slowed a bit. When the winds change later in the week, the action could well turn back on. Large cut baits fished in the sloughs and along the bars in the surf zone are the tickets to hookups with the big reds.
Speckled trout and bluefish are also feeding along the beaches (with some excellent trout reports coming from the Nags Head area). Soft plastic baits and MirrOlures will fool both.
Frank, of Frank and Fran’s, reports that the big red drum bite is on along Hatteras Island’s northern beaches, and big numbers were caught during the NC BBA tournament last weekend. Avon Pier and Cape Point have been the hotspots over the past week, and most of the fish are falling for large cut baits on fish finder rigs.
Anglers fishing with shrimp and bloodworms along the beach are connecting with some fat sea mullet, pufferfish, bluefish, small black drum, and a variety of other bottom feeders.
Bob, of Red Drum Tackle, reports that anglers have seen excellent fishing for large red drum at Cape Point over the past week. Avon Pier has also been producing some solid numbers of big reds. Large cut baits are fooling them in both paces, and the nighttime hours have been producing the best fishing.
During the days, surf anglers are connecting with good numbers of bluefish and sea mullet along with some puffers, spot, black drum, and flounder.
Claude, of Frisco Tackle, reports that surf casters on the Frisco beach are hooking up with good numbers of sea mullet, pompano, small black drum, puppy drum, and more while baiting up with shrimp, bloodworms, and cut baits.
Hatteras Inlet has been producing much of the same mix of bottom feeders, and bluefish (most 1-2 lbs.) are feeding all along the beaches.
There have been several big red drum blitzes at Cape Point over the past week, with most of the action coming at night. Large cut baits are fooling the citation-class reds.
Kyle, of Frisco Rod and Gun, reports that the big red drum bite is on at Cape Point. Anglers are catching big numbers of reds (most 30-50”) on large cut baits while fishing the point, with the best action taking place at night.
Surf fishing on the Frisco beaches has been producing good numbers of sea mullet (some citation-sized) and some bluefish.
Inshore, the red drum bite has also been solid (with most fish a bit over the 27” upper slot limit).
Offshore, the Hatteras Inlet fleet has been finding some excellent wahoo fishing (good numbers of citation 40+ pounders). Some king mackerel, dolphin, blackfin and yellowfin tuna, and a few sailfish have been scattered among the wahoo, and all are taking an interest in naked and skirted ballyhoo.
Jay, of Bite Me Sportfishing, reports that there’s been an excellent wahoo bite (sometimes producing limits of 12 fish) lately of Hatteras Inlet. The best action has been around the Rockpile and further down the break, and most of the fish are falling for ballyhoo under dark-colored sea witches. Some blackfin and yellowfin tuna have been in the mix with the ‘hoos, and the tuna bite should only get better over the coming weeks.
Alan, of Tradewinds Tackle, reports that anglers have released good numbers of citation-class red drum from the Ocracoke surf over the past week, with plenty of yearling fish in the mix as well. The action has been spread out along the island’s beaches, and most of the fish are falling for large cut baits.
Some puppy drum, sea mullet, black drum, and plenty of bluefish are falling for smaller cut baits and shrimp in the breakers.
The speckled trout bite has been decent back in the sound, and anglers are still hooking plenty of large red drum from boats in the sound as well.
