The 3rd annual Jacksonville Trout Tournament, held out of the Marina Café in Jacksonville on Oct. 21-22, had 24 boats this year competing for the heaviest trout and the heaviest 10-fish (trout) aggregate.
Brent Banks, from Jacksonville, NC, took top honors in both the big trout and the aggregate divisions. He had a nine fish total of 22.59 lbs., and his biggest single trout weighed 5.25 lbs. Banks trailered his boat down to Little River, SC, to fish. The risk of limited fishing time paid off well for Banks, with a $700 payout for the aggregate and an $480 payout for the big trout.
Jason Guthrie and Jeff Cronk, from Swansboro, took second place. Their 10 trout total was 21.04 lbs., and their big fish weighed 3.24 lbs.
Another Swansboro team took third place. David Moore and Mike Phillips weighed in 10 fish that totaled 20.66 lbs. Their big trout weighed 4.27 lbs.
Mike and Danny Teachey, also from Swansboro, took fourth place with a ten-fish total of 19.85 lbs. They were fishing the Bogue Inlet area.
Doug and Jimmy D. Kellum, from Jacksonville, had an aggregate total of 15.48 lbs., with the biggest going 2.82 lbs.
The final payout spot went to Fred Davis and Hank Martinez, out of Wilmington. They weighed in eight fish that totaled 14.63 lbs., and their biggest weighed 3.23 lbs.
Jake Gainey (age 12), from Swansboro, won first place in the Junior Angler Division. He and his father, Buddy Gainey, weighed in four fish, with Jake’s heaviest weighing 0.82 lbs.
