Mark, of Shallow Minded Inshore Fishing Charters, reports that the area fishing has been fantastic over the past week.
The red drum bite has been solid on the Little River jetties (with fish to 40+ lbs.). Live menhaden and shrimp are producing most of the action with the big reds.
Some flounder and a few speckled trout (including a 4 pounder last week) are also feeding at the rocks and will attack the same baits.
The red bite has also been on fire at Sunset Beach Bridge, where boats are at times hooking the fish on almost every cast. Live shrimp on jigheads and Carolina rigs are producing the lion’s share of the action.
Smaller reds, black drum, and flounder are feeding in the Ocean Isle canals, and all three have a tough time passing up live shrimp.
Outside the inlets, there are plenty of bluefish and spanish mackerel feeding, as well as plenty of sharks feeding on them.
There was a decent king mackerel bite at the 410/510 last week, with a few cobia in the mix as well. Live menhaden will fool both fish.
Patrick, of Capt. Smiley’s Fishing Charters, reports that the redfish action around Sunset Beach Bridge has been nothing short of incredible lately. Anglers are catching big numbers of fish (18-30+”) while fishing live shrimp around the structure.
The Tubbs Inlet flounder bite is still going as well, and Gulp swimming mullet and pogies have been outproducing live baits with the flatfish lately.
Black drum, red drum, and speckled trout are feeding in Dunn Sound, and casting live shrimp under popping corks or on light jigheads is attracting attention from all three.
The red bite has also been good in the main channel of Bonaparte Creek in recent days.
Tyler, of Cherry Grove Pier, reports that anglers are hooking good numbers of black drum and some reds while fishing live shrimp from the pier.
The flounder bite has slowed a bit in recent days, but anglers are still catching a few keeper flatfish on live shrimp and mud minnows.
Bottom fishermen are connecting with some spot and croaker on shrimp.
A few bluefish are falling for Gotcha plugs and other metal lures worked from the pier.
Live-baiters caught several spanish mackerel (in the 4 lb. range) last week.
The water is 83 degrees.
