The 1st annual Oak Island Open “Youth” Pier Tournament was held on Saturday, August 18, at Ocean Crest Pier. It was sponsored by the Oak Island Parks & Recreation Department, Ocean Crest Pier, and the State Port Pilot.
The event attracted 58 young anglers from ages 18 and under, and they fished from 6:00 am to 3:00 pm on the pier.
A total of 700 fish were caught and released by the participants. The five different age groups were fishing for a variety of species in three different categories: Category One included pinfish, croaker, spot, and whiting; Category Two included trout, blue, spadefish, and pompano; and Category Three included flounder, spanish, drum, and sheepshead.

12-14 Year Olds Category One: 1st – Thomas Cutler
12-14 Year Olds Category Two: 1st – Hannah Wallace; 2nd – Blake Leigh; 3rd – Will Sanders
15-18 Year Olds Category One: 1st – Wesley Young
15-18 Year Olds Category Two: 1st – Erick Snyder
15-18 Year Olds Category Three: 1st – Nickolas McGee
