The 2nd annual Spring Flounder – Trout Classic, sponsored by Shallow Water Boat Sales and hosted at the Ocean Isle Fishing Center, attracted 39 boats in a tournament designed to award the angler who can land both a flounder and a trout during the one-day of fishing.
Grady Gordon and Kyle Hughes, both from Ocean Isle, were the overall winners. They had the heaviest one flounder and one trout, with a total weight of 3.8 lbs. In the morning they caught a 1.4 lb. flounder on a mud minnow in Tubbs Inlet. Their 2.4 lb. trout came in the afternoon in Shallotte River on live shrimp.
The award for the heaviest trout of the tournament went to Brent Banks. Banks caught a 7.1 lb. trout on live shrimp at the Little River jetties. Tim Fletcher and Roger Uzzell came in second place in the trout division. Their 6.7 lb. trout also came from the Little River jetties on live shrimp. Third place went to Ed Mosley with a 3.45 lb. trout.
The top flounder was caught by Kenny Tucker. Tucker, fishing on “Top This,” landed a 3 lb. flounder in Tubbs Inlet. “Top This” also won the Junior Angler and Lady Angler awards. Gary Culp, fishing on the “Triple J,” came in second in the flounder division with a 2.4 lb. fish. Third place went to Tim and Ed Hooks with a 2.2 lb. flounder.
