Combining a host of improvements over the company’s popular Battle series reel, Penn’s new Conflict line of spinning reels have hit the market just in time for the holiday season.
Available in sizes appropriate for everything from casting spinners for mountain trout to working vertical jigs and poppers for offshore gamefish, there’s a Conflict for just about any spinning reel task.
Designed with the balance of light weight, smooth operation, and dependable long-lasting performance in mind, the smaller Conflicts (1000-4000 sizes) utilize reinforced graphite rotors, while the larger models (5000-8000) feature aluminum rotors to keep the geartrain in precise alignment while fighting big fish at heavy drag settings.
Proprietary greased HT-100 Drag washers are keyed into the reels’ spools, making for smooth, inertia-free startups, enhanced drag range, and higher maximum drag capacities than competing reels. The larger models offer up to 30 lbs. of drag, more than most anglers can handle for a significant length of time but there when needed to put the brakes on fish speeding towards structure or running anglers low on line. Line capacity rings in the bottom flange of the spool let anglers know when it’s time to use that drag power.
Speaking of line, the Conflicts carry over the popular machined and anodized Superline Spool from the Battle Series, which utilizes a rubber gasket around the spool spindle to keep braided lines from slipping and eliminate the need for monofilament backing or tape wraps on the spool.
Aluminum bodies and sideplates on all models and heavy-duty aluminum handles and bail wires combine strength and light weight, and the handles have comfortable foam knobs in two different shapes for the lighter and heavier reels.
In the smoothness department, all the reels feature 7 sealed stainless steel ball bearings to repel sand and saltwater and a one-way roller bearing for infinite anti-reverse capability.
An attractive and stealthy black/titanium gray color scheme means the Conflicts look as good as they perform and will match well with just about any rod.
Tougher and more powerful than the Battle series, Conflicts also manage to shave 5-10% off the weight of the older models, and starting at $129.99, the reels offer an exceptional value for their price tag.
