With the end of summer comes a time that all North Carolina anglers chomp at the bit for—king mackerel season. This season’s smoker kings are finally showing up at nearshore reefs and wrecks up and down the coastline, and many are turning to their tackleboxes wondering what will be the “go to” lure of the fishing season.
With sporadic bait movements due to elevated rainfall levels, there is no need to stress or spend way more time than you wish trying to find live pogies or other baitfish, thanks to new and improved trolling lures on the market.
The most premiere of these new trolling lures has to be the Rapala X-Rap Magnum, which features a number of characteristics that separate it from the competition.
This lure is currently being offered in 19 different colorways, some of which even feature a tinted colored lip, shaking up the presence within the spread of lures and rigs. Additionally, the lure is offered in five different sizes, ranging from 4 3/8 inch to 7 inch, all of which have different pre-set diving depths.
The X-Rap Magnum is ready to fish out of the box, saving valuable time spent in the early morning or evening trying to bag enough bait for the trip. These lures’ protruding lip dives the bait deep, without any speed or weight assistance. When trolling up to 13 knots, the standard X-10 (smallest size) dives up to 10 feet beneath the surface, mimicking that of an injured and sporadic baitfish.
Moving to the alluring design, the trolling lure features a translucent body containing a holographic foil, which is standard for enticing the mean bite of king mackerel among other gamefish species. Pair that with the holographic eyes and you have a bait almost more realistic that its actual counterpart.
Down to the nuts and bolts, this lure comes standard to test the brutality of these toothy and violent fish. The body of the lure features three split rings that attach to 4/0 VMC Perma Steel Hooks, that are sure to provide that perfect hookset that is needed for these fish.
The Rapala X-Rap Magnum, along with other lures, can be found online at www.rapala.com, and they are also available at most of the local tackle retailers.
