Capt. Stanman, of Captain Stanman Fishing Charters, reports that the wahoos are here. Like all the other fish, they too are two to three weeks late. Every year the wahoo come inshore in our area to spawn. They can be caught on live bait while slow trolling for kings or fast trolling ballyhoo rigs with red/black or black/purple Cape Lookout C Jets. Don’t be surprised if you get bailed by an 80 or 90 lber.
Captain Joe Webb of the Billy Anna caught a 47 lb. wahoo at the Charlie Buoy, and Ramsey Skinner caught a 35 lber from his 18 ft. skiff at the 45 Minute Rock.
Kings are hit and miss, here today and gone tomorrow. The menhaden improved all week and are now stabilized in the ICW between Dudleys and Broad Creek. They are not turbos, but good medium sized baits. Harkers Island produced large menhaden for those fishing the East Side.
Rhonda, at Bogue Inlet Pier, reports that there’s been lots of small blues this week. The biggest may get to 12 inches, but most are smaller than 9 inches. Otherwise, it’s been a slow week. On Saturday they did weigh in some nice spanish, including a 5 lb. and a 2 lb. class fish.
Dale, at The Reel Outdoors, reports that red drum measuring up to 35 inches are being caught inside. The best way to get them to bite has been cut menhaden, but artificials are also working. Several flounder were caught in the usual areas this week, including the inlet, sound, and AR’s. Everything is on live bait, mostly mullet. The mullet are thick in the area. You can catch all the 3-6 inch mullet you want if you hit the tide right.
