Bob, at Reel Outdoors, reports that there have been a few spanish running up the coastline. Guys trolling along the shoreline have been doing well with the small kings. They’re running just up to legal size, and you can often find them mixed in with some spanish. Blues are all over the surf and nearshore waters. Most are in the 1.5 to 3 lb. range, but there are the occasional Hatteras-sized ones mixed in.
Flounder catches are starting to increase. Drift boats going for sea bass have been finding a few, and other guys have found them just off the beach at Key Post. And the artificial reefs continue to produce a few bonito.
Sharon, at Bogue Inlet Fishing Pier, reports that they saw numerous big blues on Sunday. There were over 20 fish caught that weighed in the 7 or 8 pound class. The largest of the weekend weighed in at 9 lbs. 3 oz. Prior to this run of big blues, the normal catch of blues were averaging 3 lbs. There have been a few spanish mixed in with the blues, but not any big runs. And the numerous blues have been slowing down the bottom fishing. The pier has spotted a few cobia swimming around the pilings, but none have been hooked or landed so far. And the pier has yet to land its first king of the season.
