Chris, at East Coast Sports, reports that in the surf from New River Inlet to Surf City there are a few sea mullet in the sloughs and lots of small pompano. From Surf City to Topsail Beach, the surf has produced sea mullet and flounder. The Topsail Beach to New Topsail Inlet area has seen lots of reds and big ladyfish. Lee Island still has reds at the north end and big ladyfish. Expect to catch flounder from any surf location, especially around the old piers.
As for the fishing piers, they saw tarpon, spadefish, pompano, flounder, and mullet. There were also some catches of spanish, and some black drum came in (the bite was better at night). Seaview Pier also saw a few catches of spots.
The waterway and inlet has seen black drum, sheepshead, trout at the bridge, and reds way up the river. Your best bet may be to fish the black drum at the back gate bridge
Tons of small kings are everywhere, and there’s plenty of spanish just behind the breakers. There’s not much action further offshore. No reports came in.
Frank, at Seaview Pier, reports a 108 lb. tarpon was landed this week. The fish hit a live menhaden, and it took an hour and fifteen minutes to subdue the beast. Spots and bluefish are dominating the bottom catch, but a few pompano, sea mullet, and black drum are also mixing up the catches. There are some spanish still around the pier, but no kings were caught this week.
Eric, at New River Marina, reports that there are speckled trout and red drum in the river hitting shrimp and mullet. The bigger reds are being found in the inlet. The inlet has also been producing a few flounder. Sheepshead and black drum are biting on crabs in the bridge area. Very little to report on the kings and dolphin, but the gulf stream is producing wahoo, big dolphin, and sailfish.
