Topsail July 1, 2004
Chris, at East Coast Sports, reports that the piers are seeing some blues, spanish, mullet, and spots. Also of note, each pier reported at least one king caught this week. There have also been tarpon sightings, so look for tarpon season to move in soon. The surf fishing report is the same as last week. There are a few mullet and blues. The inlets have ladyfish and red drum. Big trout are still showing up all over New River, and the ladyfish are still at the drawbridge.
Offshore, the kings have been at AR362. Plenty of dolphin are showing up in the 10 mile range. Try 9 Mile Rock for dolphin. Further offshore there have been catches of dolphin and reports of billfish.
Greg, at Seaview Fishing Pier, reports that the pier had two king mackerel landed this week. One tipped the scales at 20 lbs., and the other weighed in at 19 lbs. Spanish mackerel in the 4 to 6 lb. class are taking live baits off the end. A good black drum bite has turned on this week for those using sand fleas dug up from the beach. Flounder are still attacking mud minnows and mullet. The tarpon are thick off the beach, with six turning on baits this weekend and one being caught earlier in the week.
Eric, at New River Marina, reports nice 15 to 20 lb. black drum are coming out from the bridge area. This same area is producing catches of sheepshead, speckled trout, and flounder. The flounder are still running small for this time of year. Spanish mackerel are still hanging around the beach. The king mackerel, dolphin, and black sea bass are 10 miles and out.
