Chris, at East Coast Sports, reports a few sea mullets and spots are starting to show up in the surf from New River Inlet to Topsail Beach. South of Topsail Beach, the surf has been more likely to produce a few pompano and some big reds. And then the red drum action improves as you get to Lee Island.
Inshore, the flounder are starting to move more than they have all summer, and the inlet may be your best place to target flounder right now. There are still plenty of sheepshead all over the bridges.
The E-Buoy has had a few big kings recently. It has also produced some gaffer dolphin, and there are plenty of barracudas around.
For bottom fishermen, look to catch a few good-sized sea bass at Christmas Rock.
Further offshore, there are reports of plenty of dolphin, and this continues to be the best year in a while for billfish.
Ricky Kellum, at Speckled Specialists Charters, reports red drum and speckled trout biting in the waterway and in the river on both artificials and live baits. Weather has not allowed for ocean fishing, but the spanish and flounder should be waiting when the seas calm.
Frank, at Seaview Pier, reports plenty of bait showing up, and the fish should follow. The flounder are starting to bite better on live baits. Bluefish are around, as well as an occasional spanish mackerel. A few spots have begun to show, and night fishing has picked up for puppy drum. No reports of king mackerel, but there are some sharks around to catch.
Dedi, at Surf City Pier, reports that several puppy drum have been landed recently, with the biggest going nearly 7 lbs. The drum action has been on sand fleas. Spots and mullet bit over the weekend. There’s been a few flounder here and there, and once in a while a speckled trout will come over the rails. They’re seeing spanish but not catching them, and everyday you can expect to hook a few small blues.
Eric, at New River Marina, reports good red drum fishing in the waterway on live finger mullet, as well as the Calcutta swim baits. Flounder are being caught most everywhere on live baits. The high rise bridge is still productive for black drum and sheepshead. Spanish are in the inlet and waterway. Seas haven’t allowed for it, but when it calms the kings and dolphin are not far off the beach.
