Chris, at East Coast Sports, reports that all the piers have been catching some spots, but the strongest bite has been at Seaview Pier. They’re also seeing some mullet, pompano, flounder, and reds.
In the surf from New River Inlet to Surf City, there are still lots of reds on the north end in the wash. Surf City to Topsail Beach saw a few sea mullet. Topsail Beach to New Topsail Inlet produced mullet and pompano, and Lee Island had some specks showing up in the surf.
Specks, as well as reds, are in the creeks. Flounder have been found at Brown’s Inlet on the north side. No report from nearshore or offshore due to weather conditions.
Frank, at Seaview Pier, reports a wide variety of fish running the surf with bluefish dominating the catches. Flounder are taking advantage of all the finger mullet around. Both speckled and gray trout have been feeding on the finger mullet as well. Spots, sea mullet, pompano, and black drum are also being caught on the bottom rigs. Anglers saw some king mackerel cutting bait, but they wouldn’t take any baits. Hopefully all the bait will pull the big fish in as the water cleans up.
Eric, at New River Marina, reports that the speckled trout fishing is starting to improve and should continue to get better as the weather cools. Redfish are still upriver. You can also find them in the inlets and on the surf, with the bigger fish coming from the surf. A few flounder catches were reported, but no doormats. There are a few sheepshead still being caught around the bridge. Spots and croakers continue to bite on the bottom as well.
