Capt. Mike Taylor with teammate John Roberts, of the “Taylormade Charters” fishing team, made a repeat performance in this year’s Hook and Bones Redfish Open, taking home a check for $5,000 for their two fish aggregate weight of 13.63 lbs.
Taylor didn’t pre-fish prior to the tournament, but instead made a plan to head south if the winds and conditions were right. “The wind ended up being a little more than I wanted, so we decided to grind around some local holes,” said Taylor.
The first spot that the duo hit proved successful, and Taylor hooked up with their biggest red, 7.15 lbs., at the first spot when the fish hit a topwater. Taylor then hooked up with a second smaller red that he threw back, confident in Roberts, who had a larger fish hooked up. However, when they got the fish to the boat, the red spit the hook before they could net it, and the duo had to work to find another fish.
“We didn’t catch the second fish until about 2:30 pm, and that was after fishing 8-10 different places,” said Taylor. The second red, weighing in at 6.48 lbs., fell for a Gulp shrimp, and was enough to clinch the team a win for the second year in a row.
“I really credit my boat, a Ranger 520 Intracoastal, for getting us around quickly and into the skinny water,” Taylor explained of his win. “It was a long, hot day, and it was really rewarding to catch nice fish and win back to back.”
