Tournament Reports – Avon Pier Fish Like A Girl Tournament
The Avon Pier at Koru Village brought back its all-girls charity fishing tournament, Fish Like A Girl, for its 5th year on Saturday, October 5th, 2019. This empowering fishing tournament is about bringing the community together for a day of fishing, fun, raising funds for the Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation, and lots of pink.
The Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation is an all-volunteer group that provides support for cancer patients and their families who live on Hatteras Island and who often have to travel long distances for treatment.
This year’s event had over 120 girls cast rods into the Atlantic, and though the ocean was churning with rough surf that made casting a challenge, a number of catches were landed from the pier in the early fall fishing conditions, including bluefish, sea mullet, pompano, drum, and sheepshead.
Some top fishing highlights of the tournament included Tammy Harrison catching a 40″ red drum to take the “Biggest Fish” category; local Kelly Hendrikson taking the prize for “Most Fish Caught”; and Tami Thompson (owner of Koru Village, along with her husband Joe) taking home “Funniest Fish” after reeling up a pair of blue crabs mating. Other categories included Pinkest Angler, Furthest Traveled, Youngest Angler, and Oldest Angler, all of whom received prize packs thanks to local and industry sponsors.
Tammy Harrison landed a 40″ red drum to take the “Biggest Fish” category in the Avon Pier’s Fish Like A Girl tournament, an event that raised over $6400 for the Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation.
Joe Thompson, the creator of the Fish Like A Girl tournament, said, “This event is all about community. It is about loving and supporting each other in good times and tough times. I have yet to meet anyone whose life has not been touched by cancer. This tournament is about women of all ages coming together and supporting their community and the community in turn supporting those in need. I look forward to next year’s Fish Like A Girl on Saturday, October 3, 2020.”
At the end of the day, the event raised $6,415 for the Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation.
