Tournament Reports – Hook and Bones Redfish Open
The 2019 Hook and Bones Redfish Open was hosted August 10-11 out of the Swansboro city docks, and the event attracted 30 teams in the eighth year of the event. Tough August conditions made the waters a little rough for this year’s anglers, but still 18 teams brought fish to the scales.
The first place prize of $5,000 was won by Capt. Jason Dail and Capt. Allen Jernigan, of Team “Bumpin’ Mullet,” with an aggregate weight of 12.78 lbs. The pair also took home the Big Fish pot of $1,575, donated by Pogie’s Fishing Center, thanks to the 7.09 lb. redfish, the team’s largest of two.
Dail and Jernigan fished creeks and oyster beds around North Topsail Beach. As regular guides, the pair are no strangers to the area. The bite started slow but picked up as the day went on. Using topwaters, they caught roughly 15-20 red drum over the course of the afternoon. Both leaderboard fish were caught on Saltwater Assassin soft plastics in shallow water. The larger of the two was caught first, and the second redfish was landed about three hours later, weighing in at 5.69 lbs.
Corey Durako and Richard Gilligan, of Team “Chasin Gingers,” finished in second place with an aggregate weight of 12.47 lbs., and third place was grabbed by Luke Tippett and Jordan Nason, of Team “Full Rudders,” with a two-fish total weight of 12.12 lbs.
